07 Jan How To Make Time To Write: 3 Simple Rules
People ask me all the time how I find the time to write. Between my full time work schedule, my eight year old daughter and my booming social schedule (well maybe half booming social schedule), The simple answer is… I don’t try to find the time, I MAKE the time. In essence, I choose writing.
In life, everything is a choice. You can choose to write or you can choose to bing watch ‘Insecure’ or ‘This is US’. You can choose to write or you can choose to sleep in until 8am each morning. See, it’s not about not having the time to write, it’s all about making the choice to do it.
Of course I’m not perfect, although I do have 7 novels out, but that doesn’t mean I don’t slack off from time to time, we all do. The key is to keep that to a minimum if you want to eventually start and finish a novel or even that series of blog post.
So here are my 3 simple rules to making the time to write.
Rule #1 – Choose Writing.
Making the time for writing verses choosing the time for writing is a big difference. The best way to break that down is: Instead of trying to fit your writing into your daily schedule, schedule your day around your writing. I understand if you have a full time gig that you have to show up for, so if that is the case, create a time early in the morning or in the evening and don’t let anything else distract you.
Make writing your priority and everything else (other than your job) falls around it. Believe me, this makes a huge difference in actually getting writing done and wishing you could have gotten writing done.
Rule #2 – Cut out all distractions, yes I’m talking about the internet.
Today there are sooo more distractions than there ever before. Social media has exploded all around us and frankly it’s turning serious writers into unmotivated lurkers. The best thing I could have done is to work on a computer that was not connected to the internet. If you don’t know how to do that, simply unplug your server box and get to work. If that isn’t an option for you check out this article 8 tools to help block out online distractions.
Give yourself a good 1-2 hours unplugged (phones included) and see just how much you get done. It will amaze you.
Rule #3 – Create a Writing Schedule and Stick to it.
Weather you like to write in the morning or late into the night, create a schedule that works for you. I have found that writing at the same time each day is very beneficial in actually getting it done. Just like you schedule your dinner time, workout time or your massage time (smile) schedule your writing time. Stop trying to fit your witting into your life because believe me that will never work.
Those are my 3 simple rules that carried me through 7 novels. Don’t make the process complicated just be consistent. I am all about consistency and building great habits for success.
That’s it for now. Until next time, stay focused, stay positive and keep writing.
